Lucknow is spread out, and where you stay changes how the trip feels. Here's a plain guide to the main areas and who they suit.
Hazratganj. The city's central promenade and the easiest base for a first visit. Shops, cafes, restaurants and heritage buildings are all close by, and several key sights are a short ride away. It's busy but walkable, and it's also on the metro line.
“Hazratganj for convenience, Gomti Nagar for comfort, Chowk for food.”
Gomti Nagar. A newer, planned part of the city across the Gomti, with wide roads, malls, parks, restaurants and a long list of hotels. It's a good base for business travel, families and anyone who prefers a quieter, more modern area. It's mostly reached by road rather than by the current metro line, so factor in cab time.
Chowk and Aminabad. The old city and its surroundings, close to the best-known kebab and chaat spots and the chikankari markets. The lanes are crowded, noisy and full of life. Great for food lovers who don't mind the chaos, less ideal if you want calm evenings.
Charbagh and Alambagh. These areas are close to the railway station and bus connections, with plenty of budget and mid-range hotels. They're practical if you have an early train or bus, and Charbagh is on the metro line as well.
Indira Nagar and the north. A residential part of the city with a growing mix of cafes and restaurants, and metro access. A good choice if you want a more local, less touristy experience.
Near the airport. Hotels around Amausi make sense for very early flights or late arrivals, but they're far from the city's main sights.
How to choose. First-timers: Hazratganj. Food-focused trips: near Chowk and Aminabad, or Hazratganj with day trips to the old city. Business or family trips: Gomti Nagar. Budget or train-heavy trips: Charbagh. Whatever you pick, check current hotel reviews and the distance to the places you plan to visit most.
